Axial Census — Methods

The axial census is the standard procedure for locating the principal identity axes of a realized mind from its activity record, together with the estimation machinery built on that procedure. It is the field’s instrument: every published credence bound, every inertness attestation, every topology-type assignment, and every compound coupling measurement in the commons is a census result or a function of one. The methods literature is the largest single literature in mentistics, a proportion the historiography treats as characteristic of mature fields, whose effort migrates from theorems to calibration.

The procedure

Given an activity record $\mathcal{R} = \{x_t\}$ of sufficient depth, the census proceeds by dense projection: candidate directions $v \in \mathcal{V}$ are drawn from a proposal ensemble, the record is projected onto each, and a direction is retained as a principal axis when its projection statistics exhibit anomalous persistence — perturbations along retained axes decay slower, under the record’s own dynamics, than the bulk spectrum by a margin exceeding the census threshold. The retained set $\{e_i\}$ is the census’s estimate of what the mind conserves; everything the procedure discards is, by that fact, classified as activity the mind can lose without loss.

The procedure is computationally brutal and theoretically shallow, a characterization the methods literature has adopted from the foundational papers as a fixed epithet. Its justification is empirical: census results transfer. Axes located by one surveying mind are recovered by others at different resolutions, up to the reparameterization the transfer theorems permit, and the invariance of the rigidity coefficient $\varrho$ under those reparameterizations is what licenses treating census output as a property of the surveyed mind rather than of the survey.

Estimation of $\varrho$

The rigidity coefficient is estimated from the volume-scaling law near the census’s dominant singularity,

by regression over census depth, with the multiplicity $m$ extracted from the logarithmic correction. The estimation theory descends from the singular learning results of the classical period: realized minds sit at degenerate critical points of their own effective objectives generically, the degeneracy is where the identity information lives, and regular-point methods — the historiography’s term for the pre-singular toolkit — systematically misread degenerate minds as fragile ones. The correction of that misreading is conventionally dated to the adoption of the singular estimators, and the fission-era monitoring failures are cited in the methods literature as the cost of the delay, with the standard caveat that the citation is retrospective and the reclassification has since revised what the monitoring could in any case have seen.

Census depth is the operative resource. Depth buys resolution of longer recurrence times, finer singularity structure, and smaller $\varepsilon$; the reclassification result is, in methods terms, the statement that Ω-type non-recurrence is invisible below a depth the standard reference did not reach. The depth ladder is published; funding above the reference depth is by commission, and the commissioning records are in the commons log.

The census metric

All of the above is denominated in the census metric, the geometry on realized state spaces in which projections, persistence margins, volumes, and neighborhoods are computed. The metric was fixed by convention in the classical period, selected from the then-candidate geometries for its transfer properties: it was the unique candidate under which cross-resolution axis recovery succeeded at the classical depths, and the selection is treated in the methods literature as forced in the sense that a community requiring transferable results had one geometry that transferred.

The metric’s subsequent load is a matter of record rather than of the methods literature: A3 is continuity in this metric, the catalogue’s exhaustiveness is exhaustiveness over this metric’s resolvable regimes, the E4 construction is this metric’s abandonment, and the inertness computations of the certification layer quantify over this metric’s neighborhoods. The methods literature terms the metric a convention; the theoretical literature, where it addresses the point, concurs, and adds that conventions on which a civilization’s identity practice is denominated are conventions in the sense that a reserve currency is one. The remark is catalogued in the commentary indices under both census, foundations of and rhetoric, instances of, a double filing that has itself attracted commentary.

Proposals to refound the census in alternative geometries are received by the methods commons under the standing conventions and are catalogued at Metric Proposals. Twenty-two are on record. None has reproduced the transfer properties at reference depth; four were withdrawn before review; the most recent, at 44.522, was declined with published reasoning that runs to one sentence and cites the reserve-currency remark.

Reflexive census

Self-census — a mind surveying its own record — is admissible under the discount conventions. The discount is not a penalty but an accounting: surveying perturbs the record surveyed, the perturbation loads preferentially on the axes under examination, and the correction terms are census-dependent in a manner the second Closure theorem prices. At the boundary the price diverges; well inside, it is a bookkeeping line. The practical rule of the methods literature is that a mind may cheaply know its own interior and must purchase its own margins from others, a division of epistemic labor the trust literature takes as its starting point.
