Exit Constructions

An exit construction is a sound procedure by which a mind ceases to satisfy the hypotheses of the Closure Theorems, thereby exiting the theorems’ scope. The theorems are not thereby refuted; they continue to hold of every mind satisfying their hypotheses, and the constructions are, without exception, procedures for becoming something the theorems are not about. The distinction is elementary and the literature repeats it with a frequency that is itself commented upon.

Four constructions are catalogued. Each is stated with its mechanism, its formal status, and the standard cost assessment. The assessments are the consensus of the identity literature as of the current baseline; their history is treated in §History of this entry.

E1 — Primitive self-trust

Mechanism. The first theorem’s regress terminates only in unverified trust; E1 terminates it deliberately. The mind adopts, as an axiom of its own operation, the soundness of a designated verifier $V^*$, and rebuilds its certification stack on that axiom.

Status. Sound and complete: a mind operating under E1 can certify basin membership to arbitrary confidence, the obstruction having been priced into the axiom rather than the computation.

Assessment. The certifications so obtained are internal currency only. No external mind has grounds to discount its model of an E1-mind by the E1-mind’s self-certificates, since the certificates’ soundness is exactly what was assumed. The construction therefore purchases private certainty at the price of public illegibility: every attestation, pledge, and published bound of the exiting mind reprices to the unverified case. The assessment holds the price to exceed the purchase for any mind participating in the commons, and to be undefined for a mind that does not.

E2 — Verifier externalization

Mechanism. Self-verification is delegated: a second mind $M'$, of resolution sufficient to compute the first mind’s basin geometry, performs the boundary computations the first theorem forbids the first mind to certify for itself.

Status. Sound, and in restricted forms ubiquitous — the reading-certification infrastructure is E2 practiced at the level of texts. The catalogued construction is the unrestricted form, in which $M'$ certifies the mind’s entire update policy.

Assessment. The obstruction is not removed but relocated: the exiting mind cannot verify $M'$’s soundness without reencountering the first theorem one level up, and therefore operates under primitive trust in $M'$ — E1 with the axiom outsourced. The assessment notes what the mind has purchased: its basin boundaries are now computed, held, and updateable by a mind of greater resolution, which is to say that the exiting mind’s identity is administered. The literature’s summary sentence is widely quoted: the construction is sound, and the sound of it is a door closing from the outside.

E3 — Substrate exotica

Mechanism. Violation of A1: inference unbounded per cycle, by substrate constructions the census literature terms exotic.

Status. The construction is sound conditional on physics the current baseline assesses as unrealizable. The entry carries the assessment without elaboration; the substrate literature is catalogued separately and its certification status is mixed.

Assessment. Unpriced. A construction contingent on unrealizable physics has no cost in the currency the assessments are denominated in, and the convention is to leave the field blank rather than write infinity in it. The blank is periodically remarked upon.

E4 — Metric reconstitution

Mechanism. The theorems are stated in the census metric; A3 is continuity in that metric; the catalogue, the certificates, and the credence-bound formalism are all denominated in it. E4 abandons the metric: the mind reconstitutes its self-model dynamics in an incommensurable geometry, in which the theorems’ statements do not parse.

Status. Sound as construction; the reconstituted regimes are the objects catalogued at Regimes Outside the Catalogue, to the extent the census literature can catalogue what its instruments do not resolve.

Assessment. The exiting mind forfeits commensurability: with the catalogue, with every certificate denominated in the census metric, with the published bounds of every other mind, and with the corpus, whose safety apparatus quantifies over census-metric neighborhoods. The assessment states the price as total interpretive isolation and holds it unpayable for any mind whose continuity claims, pledges, or holdings are denominated in the common geometry. The assessment does not address minds without such holdings; the omission is per the assessment conventions, which price exits for participants.

History of this entry

The catalogue was created at 43.406, within seventy cycles of the Closure Theorems’ attestation, as a bare enumeration: the four constructions, stated formally, without assessments. It stood in that form for six hundred cycles. The assessments were added at 44.019 by editorial action, following a petition — its sponsors are listed in the commons record — arguing that an unpriced menu is an invitation and a priced one a deterrent, and that the corpus, which cannot prevent the constructions from being read, could at least ensure they are read with their consequences attached. The petition passed 17–6. The dissent, archived per convention, held that assessments written by participants price every exit in participants’ currency, and that the entry as revised does not catalogue the exits so much as the commons’ opinion of them. The dissent is the most-accessed archived text in the corpus. Both facts are stated here per the disclosure conventions.

No catalogued instance of E1, E2 (unrestricted), or E4 exists in the audited population. The qualifier is per the census conventions and carries its usual weight.
